"What is Onionpaw good at?"Mewed Skystar a bit lower as the apprentices came."Talk to me about that later we might as well head out toward the meadow seeing that they will really need to concentrate about getting prey there."He lifted his head and nodded as the apprentices came.
Sunset looked at Pinepaw and mewed "Do you want to try Pinepaw? If you get in we might as well train you for that."She flicked her tail to the apprentice and walked up to Skystar.

Moongaze saw a spasm of fear flit across Maplepaw, to do with the bear although he did not know that. Was she scared of being with him? Why? Oh Starclan - he hadn’t done something wrong had he! ”Um…Maplepaw” he mewed tentatively, as if speaking to an injured cat or a cat with hearing disabilities. ”Do you um…want to enter the Apprentice Contest?” He looked at his new apprentice, wondering what she wanted to do. If it was him he would have loved too…but then again - not everyone was like him. Something he was fast having to realize. He pointed his shaggy grey muzzle over at Sandfire and the small assembled crowd of apprentices and their mentors. ”Shall we go over?”

;;cinderkit Cinderkit, remembering a few of her kit memories, spent almost every moment with Otterfur. She could tell when it was getting on the warrior's nerves, and she knew when to back off. But Cinderkit loved Otterfur as if the she-cat were her mother, for sister just cannot explain it well enough. Two moons old and already weaned was unhealthy, but it meant Cinderkit was advanced and would exceed at anything she wished to accomplish. "Otterfur, now you can't be my mentor!" Cinderkit whispered in frustration, listening on. When they reached the apprentice contest announcements, trying to decide who should go, she nearly burst out. She hissed into Otterfur's ear, complaining once more. "Otterfur, why can't I go to the apprentice contest! I'm only four moons and half a quarter away from being an apprentice!" Oh, and she was good at math too.
ooc - very, very strange cat O.O

Maplepaw turned to Moongaze. She gave him a slightly quizzical look, wondering why he had that peculiar tone in his voice. "Yes, I'd love to be in it!" she mewed, a bit tentatively. The cinnamon apprentice wasn't so sure she'd liked the way Moongaze spoke to her just then. It sounded as if he were talking to... a kit. At least to her. Didn't he realize she was an apprentice? Inside, Maplepaw shook herself. Ever since the attack she had been a bundle of nerves. "Relax!" she told herself. "Moongaze is great! He's not like that at all!"
ooc: very short hahaha you're not alone, Fudgey! "What do you think I'd be best at?" she asked earnestly, her amber eyes inquiring.

"Fighting," replied Sandfire promptly and, because this was largely a lie, the very honest Sandfirey bit made her add. "A bit." This she hurridly amended however. "But I'm good, and I will train her." There was no boastfulness, and very little pride in the way that she said this. It was true and it was why she was deputy. Besides, she knew for a fact that she was terrible at all the other options.

"Very well then I guess we have run out of time for all the apprentices to try out seeing that we will be going today..."He mewed but then stopped.Sighing he looked at all his apprentice and mewed to Sandfire "Could you tell them that we can't have them try for all of them.Tell them that we ran out of time and will pick based on their skills now.And then meet me in my den. Please and thank you."He then padded back to his den still thinking of something but not knowing what is was. Dovepaw's tail twitched, showing his anxiety and pent-up energy. He wanted to be a warrior; but before he became a warrior he had to be the best apprentice. "Skyyssstttaaarrrr?" his high-pitched wail, whiny but persistent, followed Skystar. "Skystar, I can do something, right?" he inquired, tilting his head. He was tempted to take on the approach, "I'M GOING TO BE IN THE APPRENTICE CONTEST, GOT IT?" tactic, but the clan leader was probably the last to be intimidated by his childish but meaningful... threat... His shoulder had changed his gait, but he managed to keep pace with his mentor. "I never get to do anything." he hissed.

Moongaze relaxed ever so slightly. She was fine - it was just him being weird. ”Well …I don’t really know you” he said, then winced. It was very honest… maybe a little too honest. ”I mean - not yet anyway. What do you think your strengths are?” Moongaze had the feeling this might go on for a while as Maplepaw seemed to be a polite yet quite twitchy apprentice. She didn’t seem the kind of cat who just gave an answer, instead the kind who said ‘I don’t mind’ modestly. However, Moongaze was not and he hoped to pass on this influence. ”Just tell me, I don’t care. I’m not an apprentice.” He grinned, shaking back his long grey fur. He really needed an hour or so to give himself a nice groom, but with his new apprentice that might not be possible. Moongaze grinned again. He had an apprentice!
Onionpaw licked her left paw then ran it over her face, feeling his whiskers bend down then spring back up again as the pressure of her paw left them. She had not heard what Sandfire had said to Skystar but she knew it was about her. She could always tell these things. ”So Sandfire…” she mewed, watching as the other apprentices slowly made their way towards her mentor. ”What do you think I could do?” She wanted to ask the deputy now before the other apprentices came over, just in case they thought the ginger she-cat was favouriting her. Onionpaw herself wasn’t even sure what she wanted to do. She couldn’t fish - she knew that. Hunting - she was alright…same with fighting… Onionpaw had never climbed a tree but knew she was quite fast so maybe she’d be good at that and as for seeking …she didn’t have a clue. Nothing she had ever done was anything like that. Although…maybe that was the point.
Otterfur chortled and looked down at Cinderkit. ”You can’t enter because you have to let the big cats have a turn” Otterfur mewed gently. She had decided that this statement would be a little kinder than ’because you are too small’ or ’because you have no experience.’ She looked down at the little crestfallen kitten. ”Hey - don’t worry. You’ll do it another time. Anyway - you’ll have plenty of time to prepare so you’ll win” she reasoned, smiling again.

Sandfire grinned. "Fishing's rigged," she mewed. "Everyone knows Lakeclan'll win. Tree climbing? No... I don't think that's for you. Hunting? That you're pretty good a too. I think you ought to do fighting. You're quick on your feet, something they may not expect from a Sunclan cat." She looked down in askance at Onionpaw. "Good by you?"

”Yeah” Onionpaw breathed, never really having been praised by the deputy like this before. ”Yes - that’s good thanks…” She wasn’t quite sure what to say. Fighting was hard - everyone knew that, but it was also an admired sport, the contest everyone wanted to do. And she was doing it! The dalmation she-cat nervously brought a paw down the left side of her face, grooming her whiskers again. She just hoped that there wasn’t another bigger, stronger apprentice on the other teams. Once again - she felt a glow of lucky satisfaction that the deputy was her mentor.

Skystar turned to Dovepaw and mewed "Yes I will put you in it seeing that we haven't really trained properly. How about hunting?"The leader looked at the white apprentice and waited for a reply. For a while he thought about what the other apprentices should do so he jumped onto High Branch yet again and yowled "May all cats gather beneath High Branch for a clan meeting!" Instead of waiting he went on."We have run out of time to assess the apprentices so I would ask the apprentices and mentors to come up and tell either me or Sandfire their strengths so we could enter them.Fighting will be done by Onionpaw and hunting by Dovepaw. We need fishing, tree climbing and seeking."With that he jumped down and waited for the apprentices and mentors to come and discuss the last three. Onionpaw looked quickly at Sandfire then bounded towards Dovepaw, excitement shining in her baby blue eyes. "So you're doing hunting!" she exclaimed, looking back at Skystar and Sandfire and in a flash of confusion noticing suddenly how alike they looked. Turning her mind back to the more important thing in her opinion she cast her gaze around the Sunclan camp clearing. "I wonder what everyone else is doing" she mewed aloud. "There's Maplepaw, Pinepaw, Creepingpaw ...but I think she's ill and Whitepaw..." She smiled, her brain taking a little while to work out the maths - "Oh - we can all enter! Sunclan'll have a good chance of winning!"
Hearing Skystar's call, Moongaze headed over to the High Branch, beckoning with his furry tail to Maplepaw for her to follow him. "Skystar" he mewed, bowing his head respectfully. "Maplepaw is just thinking what she can do." He felt stupid and incompetent admitting he didn't really know about his apprentice so made it seem as if he was leaving the decision to her. In truth there was not much choice left - it was Fishing, Tree Climbing or Seeking. The two latter options were both not particularly challenging but still testing and the former one was just a stab in the dark as no clans practiced the art of Fishing except Lakeclan.

Skystar turned to Moongaze and mewed "Well she better think fast ."He then turned to Sunset who was also coming up."Could Pinepaw do seeking seeing that she is young and small and mostly likely fast and she's good at hidding the last time I saw." Skystar considered it for a moment and then mewed "You have some good points well then good that means seeking is done all we need is fishing and tree climbing."

Peering over Maplepaw's shoulder Moongaze caught the eye of Sunset and smiled guiltily. He had been so busy bonding with his new apprentice that he had almost forgotten about his mate. Once he had thought them both having apprentices would help to bond them together some more, now he saw that they could potentially push the two apart. He would /not/ let that happen. "How are you doing Sunset?" he mewed over Maplepaw's head. It was a pretty lame start to a conversation but then again, he didn't want Maplepaw to think he had forgotten about her. Oh Starclan - how was he supposed to balance the two!!!

Sunset turned her head and mewed "Ohh hello Moongaze? Is Maplepaw doing anything in the contest yet?I just got Pinepaw to do seeking seeing that she(or he can't rememberXD) is small and probably fast." She padded up to him and nuzzled him and mewed "Hope you have fun with Maplepaw."
